Coolidge was very quiet as a child. He attended school at Plymouth Notch and Black River Academy in Ludlow, Vermont. In 1891 he went to Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. While in college his favorite subjects were oratory, and philosophy. He was never a great speaker though. Then later on in 1895 Coolidge studied law in Northhampton, Massachusetts. He was able to practice law in 1897. In Northampton he opened a law office in 1898. He worked there until 1919 and then started his political career. |

Calvin Coolidge began his political career as city councilman of Northhampton, Massachusetts in 1989. From 1900 to 1911 he served as a city solicitor, clerk of courts, representativve in the Massachusetts legislature, and mayor of Northampton. Soon after he was a sentor in the state legislature of Massachusetts. After being a lieutenant governor form 1916 to 1918. During his last year of being a lieutenant governor Coolidge was nominated for Governor of Massachusetts as a Republican. |
Calvin Coolidge wasn't a very friendly person. So while running for city councilman he would jusk go to people and say, "I want your vote," and, "I need it. I shall appreciate it." Slogans and campaign things such as this allowed Coolidge to defeat the Democratic party during he run for governor by a little less than 20,000 votes. He obtained nicknames such as "Silent Cal," because of he wasn't very outgoing with the public during his vice president years. The most famous of all campaign slogans was "Keep it cool with Coolidge." |
